The Connection is Made

Ok, it's been a while and posts will begin regularly again after the New Year. In the meantime, here's a mix version of "Connection" to keep you busy for a minute...

A Moment with....

Snow or Sun, just not rain!!!

Finally found some time to throw out a new post. This week has been a frustrating mix of snow, rain, slush, sleet, sun, and everythnig in between. At this point, I don't care if it snows or the sun comes out, just no more rain!!!!!!! Oh, and the dog feels the same way I do.

Bonus: Portland drivers in the snow

Start off your Thursday right with a some funky sounds from Ghosthustler. I don't know much about them, but will probably be looking for some more soon.

Jimmy V Week Begins

Blitzen has been Trapped!!!

If you haven't heard of Portland's own Blitzen Trapper yet, today is a great day for your musical pallet. They've been rockin' like a magic kiss since 2003, but have only recently released a new album on Sub Pop Records (Nirvana, Death Cab, The Shins, Modest Mouse, Fleet Foxes, etc.) records. Yet another band from Portland about to explode on the national scene, Blitzen Trapper is a perfect compliment to your ears this December. Enjoy the downloads!

Another great episode. Looks like Lonely Island is starting to fully take-over.

Pure Gold

Finally Friday!

Those of you who have known me for a while know what a fan of Martin Sexton I have become over the years. When I first heard "The Beast in Me" back in 1999, it was obvious that this guy possessed something special. In 2006, my wife and I had the chance to see him on Earth Day @ Grand Central Station in New York. A few hundred people and a sunny day in NYC seemed to be the recipe for the perfect concert. Here's a video from the show and a track from New Year's @ The Calvin Theatre. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

The Dayman Cometh

Lil Green Wayne?

Never one to be up to date on hip hop releases, here's a cut from(maybe) the upcoming(when?) Lil Wayne album, The Drought is Over Part 6. Or is it Part XIV? I don't know how long ago or where it leaked from, but maybe someone out there will like it. Crossing Green Day elements and Lil Wayne? You be the judge.

The band marches on...

Mimic myself and replacing my steps
If I was thinking, what was I thinking?
Put it away with a messed up night
Lyrics come out, yes, ...

I'm sure I heard this song on a TV show lately, but can't for the life of me place which one. What I do remember, however, is that it keeps playing over and over in my head. A Swedish duo spawning from the genius of Adam Lasus (Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, Yo La Tengo), Marching Band brings an indie pop reminiscent of The Shins or Belle and Sebastian. Take a listen:

65-38

Today I feel like adding a bit more to this post. This song goes out to all the Beavers fans who already bought tickets to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl. You still have an outside chance, but next time don't bank on rolling over Mighty Oregon before it happens. You definitely have a lesson to be learned. Go Ducks!!!

White Album = 40 years old?

Hard to beleive, but the White Album turned 40 this month. Wish I was there at the beginning, but I can still appreciate it now. Here's some footage from the sessions:

Was I Too Far Gone?

I think I first heard this song my freshman year of high school and still enjoy it each time it shows up anywhere. I came across this version again this morning and figured it would be great to share.

This is not a joke.

For real, not a joke. Someone actually funded this, cast this, directed this, and produced this:

The Essential BIlly Bragg

This song is definitely in my "Top 10 All-time" favorites of any genre list. A politically-charged anthem that has been around for over 20 years, Bragg yearns for an overhaul to a political climate that is in desperate need(sound familiar?). I don't really have much more to say about it, but give a listen and you may feel the same. One man, with one guitar, just letting it all go.

Da Friday Funk

A little Daft Punk to start off a Friday is never a bad thing.

Late addition...

It took me a while to find this one but it's worth it. Wait for Paul Rudd's performance, especially the pants.

Best Late Than Never

I'm a few days late, due to obvious post-Vegas haze, but SNL was back on top this last weekend (Thanks DVR). Paul Rudd showed how talented he really is, while a few other guest stars showed up throughout the show. Here's a few bits and pieces...

Ash. St. Action w/ The Ruse

I'm not going to lie. It's been a tough day all around for me, but last night's show put on by The Ruse keeps bringing me back to happy times.

John, Jim, Jason, and Mark put on one hell of a show. We made sure to get there pretty early to see everyone, and the decision was definitely a good one. The show began with a little known gem of a band, a band we'll call Soul D. They were literally just in the US for a few shows before heading back to Japan, and rocked it. Hard. If you get the chance, look them up and I promise you will not be disappointed.

Anyway, The Ruse also killed it. As packed as a Wednesday in Portland can get, it didn't matter. A great set including much of Midnight in the City (new album on Amazon and iTunes) as well as an old favorite or two. (Always a fan of "All I've Done"). So, enough about the show. Listen to the tunes, go buy the album, and go see then next time they come around.

Alkaline Trio @ the Roseland

Please excuse the poor excuse for a picture. I forgot my camera and all I had was my trusty phone. But Alkaline Trio made it back to Portland on Saturday night and played masterfully for a few songs. The bad thing was they were opening up for Rise Against, of which I am now vocally not a fan. I'll take what I can get though, and from the opening of "Private Eye," Matt Skiba and company made everything all right.

Note: You won't find any new stuff here because I just like the old stuff so much.

The powerful cello-ness of Ben Sollee

The last week or two I've been listening to a little Ben Sollee. Pretty good stuff from the Louisville, KY native and definitely can get stuck in your head. Enjoy, especially the collaboration with Jim James. Ben will be at the Hawthone Theatre rippin his cello skills on Nov. 22nd if anyone is interested.

"I've been hangin' around..."

Use Somebody, the newest video from Kings of Leon, has finally hit the internets. KOL claim they've been unsatisfied with every one of their videos to date, so hopefully they are pleased with the latest. I know I am a fan.

We now have set the stage for change in our own country and the world around us.. In honor of this occasion, a few tunes that represent our country and the change that we believe in!

Happy Halloween from the 80's Again

The Fat Boys ruled.

The Fat Boys - Are You Ready For Freddy?

Happy Halloween from the 80's

Great flick. Being re-made soon, which could really suck. And yes, Wolfman does have nards. We all know that by now.

The Drunken Rabbit Rock

I'm not going to lie. Frightened Rabbit was wasted last night. Not nervous, not upset, just plain old Scottish wasted. These 4 guys from Scotland came back to Portland(which they continued to rave about pre/post show) and spent a fun-filled day at Sassy's before the show. They made it to Holocene on time with about 150 eager souls ready for something big. By showtime, they were ready to rock and did not disappoint. An acoustic version of "Poke" and fun-filled version of "Twist" were the ones that stuck out most in my mind. Hopefully they will return soon, especially due to the fact that today a cold, drunken swim at the Oregon Coast was on top of their list. And yes, those are drunken giraffes dancing around in the pic and video.
Poke at my iris
Why can't I cry about this?
Maybe there is something
that you know that I don't?
We adopt a brand new language
communicate through pursed lips,
You try not to put on
any sexy clothes or graces.
I might never catch a mouse
and present in my mouth
and make you feel you're with someone
who deserves to be with you.
But there's one thing we've got going
and it's the only thing worth knowing.
It's got lots to do with magnets
and the pull of the moon.
Why won't our love keel over
as it chokes on a bone?
We can mourn its passing
and then bury it in snow.
Or should we kick its cunt in
and watch as it dies from bleeding.
If you don't want to be with me
just say and I will go.

Early Halloween w/ Frightened Rabbit

Frightened Rabbit will be playing tonight @ Holocene in Portland. I will be attending mainly because I have heard these guys put on a very unique and rocking show. Here are two versions of "Backwards Walk" that I enjoy, and if the show rocks, I'll post some more rockin' stuff.

Sandals and Socks

Ok, the Blazers lost last night and Oden got hurt. Disappointing, but neither was suprising. We'll work out the kinks soon.
In order to get back in the swing of things, here's some old school Lonely Island. You may know them from all the SNL Digital Shorts, but here's some early stuff from way back in the day.

Another Random Friday

Which shall include a perfect Friday song. A stellar version of "Beds Are Burning" by the D-Sailors. Enjoy the fun.

Spring Awakening in the Fall

Had the chance to see Spring Awakening last night @ the Keller Auditorium and was pleasantly surprised. The play itself was good, but the music (done by Duncan Shiek) was very well done. Safe to say I was throughly impressed and would recommend to others. Here's a song from the show...

Forgot to post this...

The morning after...

A great performance once again. These guys just continue to get better and better each year they come. Someone must have told them to start acting a little more "charismatic" on stage this time around because they were actually moving up there! The Schnitz was packed with an eclectic crowd, which seems to be the norm at their shows now days. They can appeal to anyone, and I'm sure no one there last night came away disappointed. My video below isn't the best but should give you a good idea of what went down.

The Kings have arrived!!!!

Tomorrow night, the Kings of Leon finally make it back to Portland. Hands down, these guys put on one of the best sounding live shows I have seen. I will be there front and center to witness it once again and hope to see a few of you there also. The Schnitz. 7pm. And here's some live stuff in the meantime...

Some Funky Friday Beck Awesomeness

If you ever have the chance to see Beck live, I highly recommend you jump at that chance. He puts an energy and stamp on a live show that is not to be missed. Here's a little bit of a twist on Loser courtesy of IAFYAF.

Bunny Rabbit is Back

"This guy keeps screamin, he's paranoid
Quick, someone get his ass another steroid!
Blabbedy bloo blah, bloo blabbedy bloo blah
I ain't hear a word you said, hibitity hoobla!"

Eminem is set to make a comeback later this year. Here's something that may or not be new.

An afternoon gem

Conor Oberst will be at the Crystall Ballroom w/ Jenny Lewis next Sat, Oct. 25th. I'll post some Jenny as it gets closer.

Ryan Adams Sneak Peek

The new Ryan Adams album, Cardinology, is set to drop later this month. Thanks to everydaydude for sending this one over. Here's a quick preview of the album, and it does not disappoint.

One More Timbaland Post

I am only posting this because I just listened to it over and over and over and over. I'm the not biggest fan of T-Pain or Timbaland, but for some reason this works.

Slow Your Roll

Posting a great song for no reason.

Voting is Cool

Don't want to get political, but I thought it was worth pointing out that Oregon set an all-time record for voter registration yesterday with over 2.14 million! That has to do with Presidents I think, so here are some Presidents.
